Defence Spending 2.5% GDP

voted against committing to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence amid growing global threats

What this is

On 24 March 2026 the Conservatives tabled an Opposition-Day Motion calling on the Government to commit publicly to a 2.5% of GDP defence-spending target with a stated date. Labour MPs voted NO en masse on procedural grounds. An opposition-day motion is the Opposition's vehicle for forcing the Government's hand. Many of those NO-voters had spoken in favour of 2.5% in earlier defence debates.

What changed as a result

The Motion was defeated 97-303. The Government's separate 2.5% commitment timetable remains contested.

What to read for

MPs whose speeches praised strong defence, NATO, or the 2.5% target but who voted with the whip against the motion. The procedural filter demotes these to 'unclear'. Read the speech and judge.
