Farmers' Inheritance Tax
voted to impose inheritance tax on family farms, threatening to break up farms passed down for generations
What this is
From April 2026, Agricultural Property Relief is reduced so farms above £1M of agricultural value are subject to inheritance tax at an effective 20% rate. The change came in via the 2024 Finance Bill and has driven sustained rural protest.
What changed as a result
The clauses became law with the Finance Act 2025. The protest movement and a series of compromise proposals (longer payment windows, family-ownership exemptions) remain live.
