Chagos Islands Sovereignty
voted to give away British sovereign territory in the Chagos Islands to Mauritius
What this is
The agreement in principle to transfer Chagos Islands sovereignty to Mauritius with a 99-year lease back of Diego Garcia was announced in October 2024 and remains in negotiation around financial terms and security guarantees.
What changed as a result
The deal is still being scrutinised. Costs to the UK exchequer have been the central political question.
What to read for
MPs whose statements on national security or Indo-Pacific defence frame the Chagos handover differently from how they have voted on related divisions.
