VAT on Private Schools
voted to put VAT on school fees, pushing thousands of children into already overcrowded state schools
What this is
Labour's flagship education revenue-raiser: 20% VAT on independent school fees from 1 January 2025, plus removal of business-rates charitable relief from April 2025. The Conservatives tabled an Opposition-Day Motion on 8 October 2024 calling on the Government to scrap the policy. Voting NO on the Conservative motion meant supporting the VAT. The procedural direction is inverted.
What changed as a result
The Opposition Day Motion was defeated 190-362. VAT applies and is in force.
What to read for
Local-school capacity claims, mid-year transfers, and the question of whether the VAT revenue is exceeding the cost of educating displaced pupils.
