I’d like to say a massive personal thank you to the residents of Iwade and elsewhere who took care of stranded drivers yesterday. You have really shown that the people of Sittingbourne and Sheppey are the best of Britain.

Once the current situation is resolved, I will work with local and national government agencies to ensure that in any future incidents of this kind, the emergency response is smoother and put in place more swiftly.

I have asked Southeastern Railways to delay the planned rail engineering works on the Sittingbourne to Sheerness line tomorrow to allow people to use the trains where car access isn’t practical. I am also working to secure improvements to the signage and support available for stranded drivers.

Plans are being put in place to mitigate all of these issues for the remainder of the time that the bridge needs to be closed, as well as ensure it is re-opened quickly, and I will be looking closely at this plans to ensure they meet residents’ needs.
