Water Company Regulation

voted on the Water (Special Measures) Bill to tackle sewage dumping by water companies

What this is

Following years of sewage discharges and executive-bonus controversy, the Water (Special Measures) Bill toughened the regulator's powers, including criminal penalties for executives and a bonus-clawback regime. Lords amendments softened parts; the 11 February 2025 Commons vote insisted on the stronger version.

What changed as a result

The Government's stronger amendment carried 331-65. Royal Assent followed in February 2025.
